The Soane Stable Yard at the Royal Hospital Chelsea

In 2024 Refurrb Ltd were significantly involved with the restoration and redevelopment at the Soane Stable Yard at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Soane Stable Yard reopened to the public on 1 October 2024, following a significant £12.2 million refurbishment project. This marked the first time since the hospital’s establishment in 1692 that this historic site became accessible to the public seven days a week.

Designed by the eminent architect Sir John Soane between 1814 and 1817, the Grade II* listed stable yard has been meticulously restored. The renovation preserved many of the original architectural features and reinstated elements such as the distinctive chimneys, which were damaged during the Second World War. The project was made possible through a £3.2 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with support from other benefactors and charitable trusts.

The Soane Stable Yard now serves as a vibrant hub for visitors, housing the Chelsea Pensioners Museum—a free, permanent, interactive display showcasing the rich history of the Royal Hospital and the lives of its residents. Additional amenities include a café operated by Heidi Bakery, a gift shop, a Post Office, and an activity room. Guided tours led by Chelsea Pensioners are also available, offering insights into other parts of the site.

A key component of the redevelopment is the launch of a heritage, health, and wellbeing activity programme aimed at local communities, including individuals living with dementia and military veterans. This initiative leverages the Royal Hospital’s heritage and care expertise to engage audiences with the site’s history and provide support to non-resident military veterans.

The Soane Stable Yard is located at Chelsea Gate, Royal Hospital Road, London, SW3 4SR. For more information on visiting, including booking museum tickets and tours, please visit the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s official website.
